Popularly known as the 2nd Michigan, with our headquarters at Historical Crossroads Village, in Genesee County, Michigan, our purpose is to foster, promote, and provide the advancement of the education of the general public as to the history of the Civil War (1861-1865) with particular emphasis on the participation of the 2nd Regiment and especially Company F which was recruited in the Flint area.
Nearly 2000 men served with the regiment and over 300 died while making an honorable record of service from Blackburn's Ford to Appomattox Court House.
One woman (Sarah Edmonds) also served, disguised as a man, for 2 years. In 1992 we were able to have erected near the Court House in Flint a Michigan Historical marker in her honor.
In June 1993 we helped raise $1000 to preserve the Civil War flag of John C. Hardy, then being donated to the Michigan state collection.
Our last project was the restoration of an 1843 cannon thought to have been used in the war was completed in 1999. This gun, once a prominent feature of Flint, will be placed at Historical Crossroads Village and used for living history demonstrations.
Established in 1986, our membership has varied between 9-50 members. We are a family oriented organization with members from all walks of life. We participate in about a half dozen living history events each year in addition to school appearances of about the same number.
Since 1999 we have been portraying company B Hudson Artillery as we use the cannon that we restored in reneactments. In the past a diversity of skills and interests has led to our members being able to portray soldiers of Infantry, Artillery, Medical Service, and Signal Corps. We also have members who portray Nurses, members of the Michigan Soldier's Relief Association as well as a number of Civilian roles. Even though we mainly just due Artillery at the present time we do have information on all of the above.
