PROJECTS

In the spring of 1990, we were given the personal artifacts of Theodore Burden who had served in the 15th Mich. Inf. Mr. Burden's grandson Keith wanted the items to be cared for and displayed by someone with an interest in the Civil War. We made a portable display case for the items that number 39 pieces. Most of the items are G.A.R. medals and represent nearly 4 decades of involvement with the organization. Included also is the canteen carried by Theodore during the war. The 2nd Mich. served near the 15th at many places and it is not unlikely that he visited other Michigan regiments during his service. We have displayed these artifacts and appropriate events and they have been well appreciated.

We have participated since 1991 in the "Save the Flags" project to preserve and display the Civil War battle flags in the Michigan Historical Museum. With the partnership of the 2nd Michigan, NSSA, $1000 has been donated to save one of our flags.

In 1992 we were able to get a Historical Marker erected to honor one of the regiment’s more unusual members. Sarah Edmonds disguised herself as a man and enlisted in the 2nd at the start of the War. Her service was eventually recognized by Congress and given a soldier's pension. She played many roles during her service and was a valued member until she was obliged to leave. (Text of Marker)

We have been patiently raising funds to restore an original cannon that may have been used during the War. A bronze 6-pounder gun, Model of 1841, cast in 1843 has been re-vented to allow firing and a replica wooden gun carriage has been built and is finally done. We plan to fire the gun for the "first" time during 1999. We believe that it was on public display in Flint for many decades and fell into disrepair and was nearly scrapped. (Photos)

No proper history of the regiment has yet been written. It is one of our long-term goals to collect and interpret all available information to be published in book form. Some of this information will be posted on this site to help identify problem areas and to seek help. There are numerous errors and omissions to be corrected. We cannot even tell for certain how many people served. (Some historical documents)

In July of 1999, we received two documents pertaining to Coroden S. Burge of Company K. A transcript and scanned image of each are now added. We have had a proper frame made for the display of the documents.
